What a nurse resume must show
This is a complete, editable sample for a staff nurse in Chennai — a B.Sc. Nursing, council registration, and work described in the units and ratios an Indian hospital matron checks. Open it, replace the details with yours, and export.
- State council registration, named
- Nursing is registered, not licensed like a US RN — you are registered as R.N & R.M with the State Nurses and Midwives Council (the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council in Chennai). Give the registration and its validity near the top.
- Your qualification: ANM, GNM or B.Sc. Nursing
- Indian hospitals hire against the programme and its duration — ANM (2 years), GNM (3 years) or B.Sc. Nursing (4 years) — under the Indian Nursing Council. Name the degree and the university.
- The unit and the patient load
- "A 40-bed medical-surgical unit at a 1:6 ratio" says more than "staff nurse". Say the unit type, the bed count and the nurse-to-patient ratio you carried.
- Clinical skills, specifically
- Medication and IV administration, cardiac monitoring, central-line and catheter care, wound care, infection control. Name the skills that match the unit you are applying to rather than a generic list.
- Precepting and shift leadership
- Nurses you precepted, infection-control checks you ran, shift handovers you led. This is the strongest leadership signal a staff-nurse resume can carry in an Indian hospital.
- De-identified outcomes only
- Never a patient name, bed number or case detail. Use aggregate, unit-level work — bundle compliance, incident findings, retention of nurses you trained — and keep every individual out of it.
Nurse-specific resume tips
Not generic advice — the things that move a nurse application forward.
Lead with your registration and your qualification
An Indian hospital first checks that you are registered as R.N & R.M and which programme you hold — ANM, GNM or B.Sc. Nursing. Put the registration and the degree in your summary, so a matron can confirm both before reading further.
Say the unit, the bed count and the ratio
"A 40-bed medical-surgical unit at a 1:6 ratio" tells a hiring manager your acuity and workload in one line. A medical-surgical unit and a 12-bed high-dependency unit are different jobs, so name which one you work.
Match your clinical skills to the unit
Cardiac monitoring and central-line care for a high-dependency post; IV therapy, wound care and patient education for a general ward. Lead with the skills the posting names, not a generic list of everything you have touched.
Show precepting and infection control
Nurses you trained, retention on the unit, and the infection-control checks you run are the two clearest leadership signals for a staff nurse in India. Give the numbers — six precepted, three retained — rather than "responsible for".
Keep every patient detail out
Never a patient name, bed number, diagnosis or case history. Report aggregate, unit-level work — bundle compliance, incident findings — because a resume is a document a stranger will read.
Leave personal details off the page
Modern Indian advice is to omit photo, date of birth, marital status and father’s name, and to keep Aadhaar, PAN and bank details off a resume entirely. Hospital application forms may ask for more; the resume itself should not.
Note your languages
Patient and family education happens in the patient’s language, and hospitals roster accordingly. Say which languages you are fluent in — Tamil and English, for example — because it is a real scheduling advantage.
A4, one page
A4 is the standard paper size in India, and one page is the norm for a staff nurse; two is fine for a senior or charge nurse. Length is not the problem; filler is.
What gets nurse resumes rejected
Each of these reads as a red flag to the person doing the hiring.
No council registration
Practising without a valid council certificate is an offence under state nursing law, so a resume that does not show R.N & R.M registration is set aside. Give the council and the validity.
A duty list with no unit or ratio
"Provided patient care, administered medication, maintained records" describes every nurse in India. Without the unit type, bed count or ratio, there is nothing to compare you against the next applicant.
A patient detail that should never be there
A patient name, bed number or case detail is a privacy breach on a document a stranger will read. Keep every example aggregate and de-identified.
ID numbers on the page
Aadhaar, PAN, bank or passport details do not belong on a resume. Under the DPDP Act a resume is personal data, and an ID number on a document that gets emailed around is a real risk.
Skills named in no particular order
A flat list of twenty skills says nothing about the unit you fit. Lead with the ones the posting names, and drop the rest.
No sense of the setting
A resume that does not say whether you worked a general ward, an ICU or a high-dependency unit leaves a matron unable to place you. State the setting and the size.
Nurse resume FAQs
Do I need registration to work as a nurse in India?
Yes. You must be registered with your State Nurses and Midwives Council — R.N & R.M — and practising without a valid certificate is an offence under state nursing law. The national regulator is the Indian Nursing Council.

What is the difference between ANM, GNM and B.Sc. Nursing?
ANM is a two-year auxiliary midwife course, GNM a three-year general nursing diploma, and B.Sc. Nursing a four-year degree. All lead to registration, but they differ in scope and in which posts you can apply for, so name the one you hold.

Should an Indian nurse resume include a photo, date of birth and marital status?
Modern advice is to leave them off for private hospitals and MNCs, keeping only your name, phone, email and city. Government and PSU applications still ask for the fuller biodata, so follow the form when one is required.

Which certifications belong on a nursing resume in India?
Your council registration first, with its validity, then BLS (and ACLS for critical-care posts) from the American Heart Association. Give each with its issuing body and expiry — a certification with no date reads as lapsed.

Can I put patient details on my nursing resume?
Never. No patient name, bed number, diagnosis or case detail. Report only aggregate, unit-level work — bundle compliance, incident findings, the nurses you precepted — because a resume is read by strangers.
How long should an Indian nurse resume be?
One page is the norm for a staff nurse; two is fine for a senior or charge nurse, provided every line carries an outcome rather than a duty. Set it on A4, the standard paper size in India.
