What a data analyst resume must show

This is a complete, editable sample for a data analyst in Hyderabad — seven years across a consultancy and a captives team, the toolstack Indian postings actually name, and outcomes stated in the numbers a hiring manager checks. Open it, replace the details with yours, and export.

The toolstack, named
Indian postings list SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau and Excel by name, and mention Azure, Databricks, dbt or Snowflake for modern-stack roles. Name each tool you work in at a professional level.
Business impact, quantified
Reporting time saved, revenue or conversion moved, hours returned to a team. Indian hiring managers read a resume as a list of outcomes, not a list of technologies used.
Which domain you supported
BFSI, insurance, retail, healthcare or product. Indian analytics hiring is often domain-tied, and two analysts with the same SQL depth fit very different accounts.
Data scale
Millions of rows, hundreds of gigabytes, dozens of tables. Scale is how a hiring manager in India sizes your seniority, so state it in the experience line.
The BI tool your targets run
Power BI dominates Indian enterprise posting; Tableau still appears in product and consulting teams. Lead with the one your target employer runs, and say which is your primary.
Notice period — stated plainly
Indian recruiters ask for the notice period first. A short, clear line (for example "notice period: 30 days") avoids the email round-trip and moves you to the shortlist faster.

Data Analyst-specific resume tips

Not generic advice — the things that move a data analyst application forward.

Lead with the toolstack Indian postings name

SQL appears in most data-analyst postings, followed by a BI tool — Power BI dominates enterprise roles, Tableau the product and consulting ones — then Python. Name the depth, not a bare "SQL".

Quantify with time and money

"Built 12 reports as Power BI dashboards, cutting a monthly cycle from three days to under a day" lands harder than a list of dashboards. Reporting time, hours returned and revenue moved are the outcomes this field is measured on.

State the data scale

Rows and gigabytes are how analysts size each other up. A query over a 40-million-row table sets the level of the work more precisely than the job title, and Indian enterprise roles run on large datasets.

Name the domain

Indian analytics hiring is often tied to an account or a vertical — BFSI, insurance, retail, healthcare, product. Say which domain you supported, because recruiters match on it before they match on tools.

Put the notice period on the resume

Recruiters in India ask for the notice period before anything else, and often the current and expected CTC. A short "notice period: 30 days" line saves a round-trip; keep your current CTC off the resume and share it when asked.

Lead with an unused BI tool, not a long list

If your target team runs Power BI, put Power BI first and Tableau second. A wall of eight tools reads as shallow; three you actually work in at depth reads as senior.

Leave personal identifiers off

No Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, photo or date of birth on the resume. In India send a resume, not a biodata — the biodata’s personal details (date of birth, marital status, father’s name) are not expected for private-sector roles. Under the DPDP Act a resume is personal data, so keep identifiers off.

A4, one page

A4 is the standard paper size in India, and one page is the norm for a mid-level analyst; two only if every line carries a pipeline or a measured result. Length is not the problem; padding is.

What gets data analyst resumes rejected

Each of these reads as a red flag to the person doing the hiring.

A tool list with no outcomes

A block of SQL, Python, Power BI and Excel with nothing attached describes every applicant in Hyderabad. Without a number per role, there is no reason to shortlist you over the next resume.

Writing "familiar with SQL"

Data work lives in SQL, and "familiar" reads as "I can write a basic SELECT". State the depth you work at — joins, CTEs, window functions, query tuning — or leave it to the skills line.

Current CTC on the resume

Your current salary anchors your next offer low and dates the document the moment you receive a raise. Leave it off; share expected CTC only when a recruiter asks.

ID and bank details on the page

Aadhaar, PAN, bank account or passport details do not belong on a resume. It is a privacy risk and, under the DPDP Act, unnecessary personal data.

A client named under NDA

Consultancy and captives work is usually covered by an NDA. Name the domain or the client type — "an insurance client" — rather than the client, and never a confidential dataset or dashboard.

Metrics that collapse under one question

Any figure on the resume is fair game in the interview. A lift or a saving you cannot explain how you measured does more damage than leaving it off.

Adapting this sample to your specialisation

The structure holds across analyst roles — only the toolstack, the domain and the metrics change. Find yours and swap them in.

Business intelligence (Power BI)
Lead with Power BI, the semantic model and DAX, then the self-serve reporting you built. Power BI is the default in Indian enterprise, so make it your headline tool.
Product / startup analytics
Lead with product metrics and experimentation — activation, retention, A/B testing — and the stack (Mixpanel, Amplitude, SQL). Name the product domain and the velocity you shipped at.
BFSI / insurance
Lead with the domain — reporting, risk, claims or collections — and the compliance context. Domain experience outweighs a marginal tool difference in Indian BFSI hiring.
Data engineering (pivot)
Lead with pipelines and the modern stack — Azure Data Factory, Databricks, dbt, Snowflake — and de-emphasise dashboards. This is a different role; consider a dedicated data-engineer sample.
Excel-heavy MIS role
Lead with advanced Excel (Power Query, pivots, macros), the reports you built and the turnaround you cut. MIS roles still run on Excel in many Indian firms; show the volume and the accuracy.
Fresher / first analyst role
Lead with your degree, certifications and projects, then internships. Show a real project with a dataset and a result, and keep it to one page; depth in SQL and one BI tool beats a long list.
Consulting / client-facing
Lead with the client domain, the stakeholder work and the presentations you delivered, plus the stack. Consulting analytics rewards communication as much as modelling.
Analytics manager / lead
Lead with team and stakeholder scope — analysts mentored, roadmap owned, reviews run — and the standards you set. Keep hands-on SQL and BI as a credential, not the headline.

Data Analyst resume FAQs

Do I need a degree to be a data analyst in India?

There is no licence or registration for analytics in India. A B.Tech, B.Sc., BCA/MCA or a data-science degree is the common expectation, but the toolstack and a demonstrated project carry as much weight as the degree line.

Which tools should I lead with on an Indian data analyst resume?

SQL first, then Power BI or Tableau — whichever your target team runs — then Python. Name the depth you work at — joins, CTEs, window functions — rather than a bare "SQL".

Should I put my current CTC on my resume?

Leave the current CTC off. It anchors your next offer low and dates the document when you get a raise. Recruiters will ask for current and expected CTC by email — share the expected figure when they do, and keep a notice-period line on the resume.

Do I need a portfolio or GitHub as a data analyst in India?

It is not required, but a project with a real dataset and a stated result — a dashboard, a pipeline, an analysis that changed a decision — is a strong differentiator, especially for a fresher or career switcher.

Which certifications help for data analyst roles in India?

The Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) and cloud fundamentals (AZ-900) are the ones that match Indian enterprise stacks. List the credential that fits the team you are applying to, and only if you hold it.

How long should an Indian data analyst resume be?

One page is standard for a mid-senior analyst; use a second only if every line carries a pipeline or a measured result. Set it on A4, the standard paper size in India.
