What an accountant resume must show
This is a complete, editable sample for a chartered accountant in Mumbai — an ICAI qualification, seven years across audit and compliance, and work described the way an Indian finance team reads it. Open it, replace the details with yours, and export.
- The qualification, named exactly
- In India that means the CA (ICAI) route — Foundation, Intermediate, articleship and Final — plus membership, or B.Com plus experience for non-chartered roles. Name the qualification and the body rather than "accounting experience".
- GST and TDS work, in detail
- GST returns, GSTR-2A reconciliation and TDS computation are the daily work of Indian accountancy. Say which returns you filed, for how many clients, and any departmental-assessment work.
- Reporting under Ind AS
- Indian companies report under Ind AS (converged with IFRS), not US GAAP. Name the standards you prepare under and the schedules and notes you own.
- Close ownership with numbers
- How many days the close takes, how many entities and accounts you reconcile. A before-and-after on the close cycle is the strongest line a finance team checks.
- The systems by name
- Tally (TallyPrime) is near-universal in Indian firms; SAP, Oracle and NetSuite appear in larger corporates. Name the ERP you run, plus advanced Excel, because the team runs one system.
- Client confidentiality maintained
- ICAI rules require client confidentiality, so never name a client with their private figures or put a client’s PAN, GSTIN or UDIN on the page. Describe the work by category and your own percentage improvements.
Accountant-specific resume tips
Not generic advice — the things that move an accountant application forward.
Lead with CA (ICAI), not the degree
For an Indian finance team the chartered qualification is the first check — the ICAI route and membership year. Put "CA (ICAI), 2019" in your summary, then the degree. If you are still clearing Final, say "CA Final — Group II pending", honestly.
Show GST and TDS work concretely
GST returns, GSTR-2A reconciliation and TDS filing are the core of Indian compliance work. Say what you filed and for how many clients — "reconciled GSTR-2A for 20+ clients each month" — rather than "handled tax compliance".
Say you report under Ind AS
Indian companies report under Ind AS, and a US-formatted resume that says "GAAP" reads as a mismatch. Name the standards you prepare under and the notes, schedules and disclosures you own.
Make the close cycle the headline number
How long the close takes is the metric a finance team tracks. "Cut a client’s monthly close from seven days to four" says more about your process work than any list of journal entries.
Name the systems, Tally first
Tally (TallyPrime) is near-universal in Indian firms, with SAP and Oracle in larger corporates. Name the ERP you actually run, plus advanced Excel, because a finance team standardises on one system.
Keep client work confidential
ICAI rules require client confidentiality. Never name a client with their private figures, and never put a client’s PAN, GSTIN or an attestation UDIN on the resume. Describe the work by category and your own percentage improvements.
Leave personal details off the page
Modern Indian advice is to omit photo, date of birth, marital status and father’s name, and to keep Aadhaar and PAN off a resume entirely. When an employer’s own form asks for more, follow the form.
A4, one page
A4 is the standard paper size in India, and one page is the norm for an accountant; two is fine for a senior or manager role. Length is not the problem; filler is.
What gets accountant resumes rejected
Each of these reads as a red flag to the person doing the hiring.
"Accounting experience" with no qualification named
An Indian finance team checks the CA (ICAI), CMA or B.Com line before anything else. Leaving the qualification vague — or implying membership you do not hold — gets the resume set aside.
A client named with their figures
Naming a client with their revenue, losses or balances breaks ICAI confidentiality and reads as a professionalism error. Anonymise and generalise; the work matters more than the name.
Duties with no close-cycle number
"Prepared journal entries, performed reconciliations, assisted with audits" describes every accountant in India. Without a close-cycle figure or a measurable result, there is nothing to compare.
US GAAP on an Indian resume
Indian statutory reporting is under Ind AS. Leading with "US GAAP" signals a mismatch with the local team, unless you are applying to a US-incorporated entity specifically.
ID numbers on the page
Aadhaar, PAN, bank or UDIN details do not belong on a resume. Under the DPDP Act a resume is personal data, and an ID number on a document that gets forwarded around is a real risk.
No sense of which systems you run
A resume that never names Tally, SAP or Excel leaves a finance manager unable to judge your ramp. State the ERP you own hands-on.
Accountant resume FAQs
Do I need to be a CA to work as an accountant in India?
Not always. A B.Com plus experience carries many industry accounting roles, but the CA qualification from ICAI is expected for audit, tax and senior finance positions. Say plainly which qualification you hold — CA, CMA or B.Com.

How do I list a CA qualification on my resume?
State "CA" only after you have cleared Final and taken ICAI membership — put the qualification and the membership year in your summary. If you are still clearing, say "CA Final — Group II pending" rather than implying membership.

Which skills matter most for an accountant in India?
GST, TDS and Ind AS reporting, plus Tally and advanced Excel, with SAP or Oracle in larger firms. Indian statutory work runs on these, so name the returns you file and the standards you prepare under.

Can I name clients on an accounting resume?
Only if you are cleared to, and never with their private figures. ICAI rules require client confidentiality, so anonymise — "a mid-cap manufacturing client" — and never put a client’s PAN, GSTIN or an attestation UDIN on the page.

Should an Indian accountant resume include a photo, date of birth and marital status?
Modern advice is to leave them off for private firms and MNCs, keeping only your name, phone, email and city. Traditional firms may still expect the fuller biodata, so follow the form when one is given.

How long should an Indian accountant resume be?
One page is the norm for an accountant; two is fine for a senior, manager or CA with a long client list. Set it on A4, the standard paper size in India.
